Domestic abuse plagues far too many Minnesota families, with data from the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women revealing that a tragic 24 Minnesotans died at the hands of partners or other family members in 2017. Many others experience considerable physical and mental suffering. Few seek the help they deserve. Resources are within reach, however, and many local organizations are ready to lend a helping hand — as highlighted below.

Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women

The Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women (MCBW) aims to provide a voice to the victims of domestic violence, while also initiating broad social and legislative change. While MCBW maintains a variety of community initiatives, Minnesota residents in the midst of abuse may benefit most from contacting the organization’s crisis hotline at (866) 223-1111.

Tubman’s advocates help domestic abuse victims develop personalized safety plans, which can prove invaluable in the event of a crisis. The organization also offers emergency shelters, transitional apartments, and a variety of workshops.

Domestic Abuse Project

From crisis intervention to group counseling, the Domestic Abuse Project (DAP) provides a range of services designed to address the far-reaching impacts of abuse. Drop-in case management is available for those with immediate concerns, while short-term case management can provide additional assistance as recipients adjust to their new lives. With DAP’s help, both victims and perpetrators can do their part to end the cycle of abuse.

Women’s Shelter and Support Center

Serving over an annual 3,800 domestic abuse victims, the Women’s Shelter and Support Center reaches residents in southeastern counties that otherwise lack crisis intervention services. The organization offers emergency shelters, support groups, safety planning, and a 24-hour crisis line at (507) 285-1010.
